Society News

The Chairman, Lou Dall'est was an apology this evening and so Vice-President Warwick Remington chaired the meeting in his absence. The meeting for August was opened at 8.15pm with a warm welcome to the 54 members in attendance.
Main Feature:

Committee Member Steven Maric introduced another of our Committee members, Daniel Tenaglia, who was the guest speaker at tonight's meeting. Daniel has been keeping birds for the best part of 35 years in one form or another. His initial interest in birds began with Budgies and Pigeons quite some time ago and developed to the point where today he has a large number of flights housing a variety of birds. Tonight's presentation was titled "White & Black Cockatoos". Daniel began by addressing the White Cockatoos. He spoke about Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Little Corellas, Long billed Corellas, Major Mitchells and Galahs. As Daniel spoke about each of the sub species, and their mutations, he displayed excellent photographs which made it easy to observe the differences (subtle in some cases). He then went on to discuss the Black Cockatoos ie White Tails, Yellow Tails and Red Tails and the sub species. Along with the many flights and aviaries that Daniel maintains is a large (and I mean large) flight. It measures approximately 50 x 20x12 metres and houses his Black Cockatoos. They all co-exist quite happily and in fact breed freely in a range of nest boxes/logs at various heights. Daniel suggests that the Cockatoos do not cross breed at all, show little or no aggression and raise young to maturity if left to their own devices. Daniels preference is to hand raise most of the Black Cockatoos and has a well set up breeding room for this purpose. He feeds Grey Sunflower, Corn, Celery (blended), Vegetables and Mealworms. He feeds his hand reared babies on Vetafarm Hand Raising Formula. Daniel went on to answer a large variety if questions from the floor. If the number of questions raised were any indication, Daniels presentation was the highlight of the evening. I am sure, like myself, members were most impressed with the knowledge an enthusiasm displayed by Daniel during his presentation. He was thanked by Matt Baird and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Society for his contribution General Business:
