Save The Gouldian Fund reports that a PhD student, James Brazill-Boast, "is undertaking his final season of field work looking at the effect of breeding competition from the long-tailed finch on the breeding densities, parental care and reproductive success of Gouldian finches".

An interesting photo of a blue sparrow Passer domesticus sighted in Sydney garden is an unusual feature in the July issue of Finch News, monthly magazine of the Queensland Finch Society.

The May 21 issue of Cage and Aviary Birds, England, features an interesting report on the restoration of the aviary in the grounds of Kenilworth Castle - Kenilworth, Warwickshire, that was originally built for a visit by Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1575. Now, more than 400 years later this luxury structure measuring 9m long x 4.3m wide x 6.1m high, is destined to be another tourist attraction in the midlands of England.

The Queensland Finch Society is celebrating its 40th Birthday Celebrations over the weekend of Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September 2009 with a general meeting featuring an international guest speaker, an aviary tour by bus and gala dinner on Saturday night followed by their annual auction the next day - Sunday 13th.

Various publications, including the newsletter of the World Parrot Trust, have reported that a recent visitor to New Zealand from Scotland had his passport stolen from his "brightly coloured courier bag" when the tour bus stopped in the Fiordland region of the South Island. The thief who stole the passport when the coach driver opened the luggage compartment was a kea Nestor notabillis, New Zealand's large parrot known for its inquisitive, mischievous, vandalising behaviour - especially for removing the rubber surrounds of car windscreens!

Percy Holland, editor of The Grassfinch, the quarterly magazine of the England-based Australian Finch Society has announced that he'll retire from this position at the end of this year.

JOIN US IN OUR NEW MEETING VENUE
The Society has been meeting in our new Venue in Melbourne from March this year.
The Monthly General Meetings are being held in the Trades Hall Council Building, situated at 2 Lygon Street, corner of Victoria Street, Melbourne (Melway Map 2B 11). The Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month.
The Hall’s seating arrangements caters for our members quite adequately in a warm and comfortable environment. The Audio Visual facilities allow guest speakers and presenters to deliver their presentation in a most professional manner. There is ample parking available after 6pm on the premises. Enter the parking area by the laneway next to the Trades Hall off Victoria Street and drive up the ramp to the next level.
Parking is also available off Lygon Street (laneway next to the Hall). To access the Meeting Hall (New Council Chambers) enter the building via Victoria Street, walk through the lobby area to the stairs on the left, up to the next level and follow the directions/signage to the “New Council Chambers”. Come to the next meeting of the Society and enjoy the friendly company and atmosphere in our new venue.
